Once again it's a crappy, cold and rainy day in Chicago, so I took the opportunity to reminiscence over a fabulous trip to Miami last weekend.

The two-night party hosted by Thrillist took over the spectacular Fontainebleau, transforming it into the first-ever Hotel Thrillist.

More than 150 social influencers, media types, VIPs and lucky sweepstakes winners from across the country indulged in a number of cool events, ranging from mixology and deejaying lessons to beach yoga and an afternoon cocktail pool party.

The highlight for 312DD, of course, was the food. All of the hotel's restaurants got in on the action to feed this fabulous set of folks, but it was Gotham's grub that was on another level.

The swanky steakhouse's chef John Suley squared off against Red The Steakhouse chef/partner Peter Vauthy in a poolside BBQ Showdown. 312DD served as a judge alongside Zagat's Kathleen Squires and Thrillist's David Blend for three solid courses.

Gotham's massive Madagascar shrimp appetizer (accompanied by papaya, mango and avocado) dominated Red's fist-sized scallops that were drenched in bacon fat and served over thick, maple-cured bacon. But Red's signature steak, which was nicely marinated and served in a "deconstructed" manner, impressed the judges more than Gotham's thicker-cut rib eye.

Desserts were equally impressive, but an easy call on the judges' part. Gotham went seasonal with a light crumble accompanied by fresh berries, mousse and chocolate sauce, while Red opted for a piping-hot rhubarb crisp that did not go well with 80+ degree heat.

Overall, the food at Hotel Thrillist didn't disappoint, and we're anxious to see where the event lands next year.

Incidentally, Thrillist just launched its iPhone app today, so I guess if we want to know we'd better sign up!
